Both village and town are on the west border of Clinton County, west of Plattsburgh.\nThe town was first settled around 1838.\nA prison was opened in 1845 in order to use the prisoners in local mining operations. The town was formed in 1854 from the Town of Beekmantown.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 65.8\u00a0square miles (170.4\u00a0km\u00b2), of which 59.2\u00a0square miles (153.3\u00a0km\u00b2) is land and 6.6\u00a0square miles (17.1\u00a0km\u00b2) (10.06%) is water.\nThe west town line is the border of Franklin County.\nMost of the town is within the Adirondack Park on the west side of the county.
