As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 308.\nPine Hill became an important tourist community when the Ulster and Delaware Railroad railroad reached it in 1872. It was known as the \"Saratoga\" of the Catskills. In 1895, Pine Hill became an incorporated village, but the village voted to dissolve its incorporation in 1985, becoming an unincorporated entity (hamlet).\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4\u00a0km).5.5\u00a0km\u00b2 (2.1 mi\u00b2) of it is land and 0.47% is water.\nThe community is inside the Catskill Park.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 308 people, 138 households, and 81 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 146.2 per square mile (56.4\/km\u00b2). There were 279 housing units at an average density of 132.4\/sq\u00a0mi (51.1\/km\u00b2).
