The area was called \"Hermitage,\" and the name \"Peconic\" was adopted later. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was home to the Peconic School, an artist colony initially led by painters Benjamin Rutherfurd Fitz and Edward August Bell.\nA history of the area\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 5.0 square miles (13\u00a0km), of which, 4.8 square miles (12\u00a0km) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26\u00a0km) of it (2.82%) is water.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 1,081 people, 426 households, and 310 families residing in the CDP.
