Located on the Deschutes River, much of the city's economy is related to the river through outdoor activities, such as fishing and rafting. The population was 411 at the 2000 census.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4\u00a0square miles (3.5\u00a0km\u00b2), of which, 1.3\u00a0square miles (3.4\u00a0km\u00b2) of it is land and 0.1\u00a0square miles (0.2\u00a0km\u00b2) of it (4.38%) is water. Road access is provided by U.S. Route 197 which crosses the Deschutes River in town at one of the few places the Deschutes can be crossed north of Madras.\nMaupin is named for Howard Maupin, a pioneer who had a farm and ferry at the town's location in the late 19th century. Originally named Maupin Ferry by town founder W. H. Staats, the city's name was shortened to Maupin in about 1909.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 411 people, 181 households, and 112 families residing in the city.
