The population was 3,059 at the 2000 census.\nWindow Rock is the seat of government for the Navajo Nation, the tribal government of the second largest Native American tribe in the United States, and contains the Navajo Nation Zoological and Botanical Park, as well as the Navajo Nation World War II Memorial.\nUntil 1936, the area was sparsely populated and known only by its ceremonial name Ni\u02bc A\u0142n\u00edi\u02bcgi (\"Center of the World\"). John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs, chose the site to establish the seat of the Navajo Central Agency.
