The population was 3,487 at the 2000 census.\nIn the early 1900s many of Kenedy's gunfighter's shooting caused the town to be nicknamed \"Six Shooter Junction\".\nDuring World War II, the Kenedy Alien Detention Camp was located near the outskirts of the town. This was a prisoner of war camp that started as an internment camp for Germans, Italians, Japanese, and South Americans.\nKenedy is also the site of the John Connally Unit, a state prison. On December 13, 2000, a group called the Texas Seven escaped from that prison.
