The series began on the launch night of Channel 4 on 2 November 1982, and ran for 21 years until 4 November 2003. Originally intended to be called Meadowcroft, the series was produced by Mersey Television and it was conceived by Phil Redmond who also devised Grange Hill (1978\u20132008) and Hollyoaks (1995\u2013present) the latter of which has taken Brookside's place as Channel 4's programme in the \"Top 4\" British soaps, alongside EastEnders (1985-), Coronation Street (1960-), and Emmerdale (1972-).\nBrookside became very successful for a number of years and is notable for its tackling of realistic and socially challenging storylines.
