At the 2006 census, Avenel had a population of 728, up from 552 in the 2001 Census.\nThe town was established along the old Hume Highway and the highway now bypasses the outskirts of the town. The Post Office opened on 2 June 1858. It was named for the birthplace of the a Mr. Hughes, the village of Avenel, Scotland, which in turn was named for the fictional castle and family in Sir Walter Scott's Tales from Benedictine Sources: The Monastery (1820) and The Abbot (1820). Hughes first laid out the future town, and named the Hughes Creek, which flows through it.\nAvenel was the hometown of Ned Kelly in his younger years, where he saved a boy from drowning in the local Hughes Creek.
