In 1876 the remaining members of the Younger gang were captured near Madelia after their failed attempt at bank robbery in Northfield, MN.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1\u00a0km). None of it is covered by water.\nMinnesota State Highways 15 and 60 are two of the main routes in the city.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 2,340 people, 911 households, and 571 families residing in the city.
