The population was 1,042 at the 2010 census.\nThe city is named for a nearby 60-acre (243,000 m\u00b2) island. At one time, the island, was surrounded by sloughs and covered with many huge, beautiful trees, which were a refuge for thousands of birds, gave the town its name. After the installation of ditches and tile the area was converted to farmland, erasing the town's namesake.\nKSTP-TV, Channel 5 weather forecaster, Barry ZeVann, (Minneapolis NBC affiliate at the time) often listed the temperature in Bird Island during his weather forecasts in the 1970s.\nThis town also is where the Renville County Fair Is Held.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9\u00a0km), all of it land.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 1,195 people, 499 households, and 303 families residing in the city.
