The town of Union was divided five years later into two new towns and the name \"Ixonia\" was given to one of them on January 21, 1846.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.5\u00a0square miles (94.6\u00a0km\u00b2), of which, 35.9\u00a0square miles (93.1\u00a0km\u00b2) of it is land and 0.6\u00a0square miles (1.6\u00a0km\u00b2) of it (1.64%) is water.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 2,902 people, 1,047 households, and 864 families residing in the town. The population density was 80.7 people per square mile (31.2\/km\u00b2). There were 1,082 housing units at an average density of 11.6 persons\/km\u00b2 (30.1 persons\/sq\u00a0mi).
