The population was 810 at the 2000 census.\nForced to move after April 2, 2002 when a 5.1 magnitude earthquake at Au Sable Forks, New York damaged the town office, the town clerk moved records into the basement of her home. When the town made no provision for facilities, the clerk resigned in 2008, and evicted the town from her home. In July, 2008, the town voted 160-to-33 to provide funding to move the offices into a portion of the town's elementary school.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 46.6\u00a0square miles (120.6\u00a0km), of which, 13.7\u00a0square miles (35.6\u00a0km) of it is land and 32.8\u00a0square miles (85.1\u00a0km) of it (70.50%) is water.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 810 people, 333 households, and 237 families residing in the town.
