The city includes the heavily industrialized Zug Island at the mouth of the River Rouge.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.8 km\u00b2), of which, 2.7 square miles (6.9\u00a0km\u00b2) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.9\u00a0km\u00b2) of it (21.70%) is water.
