It is the capital of Stendal District and unofficial capital of the Altmark. Its population in 2001 was 38,900. Stendal has a university, a market and a psychiatric rehabilitation clinic.\nFounded\u00a0by\u00a0Albrecht the Bear in the 12th century, it quickly became an important member of the Hanseatic League.
