It originally incorporated as a village on June 25, 1930.\nThe population of the Hamlet of Derwent according to its 2009 municipal census is 125.\nIn 2006, Derwent had a population of 117 living in 61 dwellings, a 5.4% increase from 2001. The hamlet has a land area of 0.38\u00a0km (0.15\u00a0sq\u00a0mi) and a population density of 309.0\u00a0\/km (800\u00a0\/sq\u00a0mi).\nDerwent lies 41 km north of Vermilion, 35 km south of Elk Point, 20 km east of Myrnam, and 38 km west of Dewberry on Highway 45, 7 km west of Highway 41.\nEstablished in 1928 when the Canadian Pacific Railway opened a rail line through the region, it was named after Derwent, Derbyshire, England.
