It is the birthplace of Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840\u20131916) and Sir Harry Oakes, 1st Baronet (December 23, 1874 \u2013 July 7, 1943).\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.7 square miles (103\u00a0km), of which, 38.5 square miles (100\u00a0km) of it is land and 1.1 square miles (2.8\u00a0km) of it (2.90%) is water.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 1,270 people, 554 households, and 361 families residing in the town. The population density was 33.0 people per square mile (12.7\/km\u00b2). There were 787 housing units at an average density of 20.4 per square mile (7.9\/km\u00b2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.35% White, 0.55% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.16% Asian, and 0.47% from two or more races.
