The population was 59,443 at the 2000 census.\nOriginally called \"Coral City\" by developers, pressure from the city of Coral Gables forced a name change to Carol City. In 2003 the community was incorporated into the city of Miami Gardens.\nIn the 1960s much of Carol City included farmland.\nAs the decades progressed, many people in Miami Gardens blamed the public housing in the area, including the developments around Carol City High School, of importing crime and recreational drugs into the area.
