The city has a population of 55,163 (2002), while population of the municipality is 122,893. \u0160abac acquired city rights in 2007, after a partial restructuring of local government in Serbia.\nThe etymology of name \u0160abac is uncertain, although its resemblance to the name of the Sava River is suggestive. This name is in use since the end of the 15th century. In Serbian, the town is known as \u0160abac (\u0428\u0430\u0431\u0430\u0446), in Bosnian as \u0160abac, in Turkish as B\u00f6\u011f\u00fcrdelen, in German as Schabatz, and in Hungarian as Szab\u00e1cs.\nHuman settlements existed in this area in neolithic times.
