Creedmoor's unusual name comes from a legend of an old cartographer named Creed Moor who strolled through the town during the late 19th Century. Creedmoor was once home to the Chappell Mule Dealers Company, (once the largest dealer of the animal), naming the city \"The Mule Capitol of the World\". A title which is now held by the city of Benson in Johnston County, North Carolina.\nIn 1905 local entrepenuer Thomas H. Lyon applied for a town charter for the city, and later that year the United States granted Creedmoor a Post Office located on the town's main street. The home of Thomas Lyon lies on the main street (now modern-day Elm St.) across the street from the original home of the First Baptist Church of Creedmoor (now located on Main Street).
