The population was 1,329 at the 2000 census.\nMilam is located at 31\u00b027\u203213\u2033N 93\u00b047\u20327\u2033W\ufeff \/ \ufeff31.45361\u00b0N 93.78528\u00b0W\ufeff \/ 31.45361; -93.78528 (31.453492, -93.785384).\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 33.4 square miles (87\u00a0km), of which, 32.8 square miles (85\u00a0km) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6\u00a0km) of it (1.71%) is water.\nWith an approximate settling date of 1828, it was originally dubbed Red Mound, but would be re-named again in honor of Benjamin Rush Milam (a famous figure in the Texas Revolution) when it became the municipal seat of Sabine County eight years later, and remain so until 1858. During the Civil War, the Confederate Army Quartermaster for the county would serve from this location.\nAs of the census of 2000, there were 1,329 people, 608 households, and 424 families residing in the CDP.
