It is situated near Fenway Park, Boston University and the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in the Fenway-Kenmore section of Boston.\nAlthough originally intended solely for special service to Fenway Park, the station is now serviced by regularly scheduled commuter trains and is used by workers from the Longwood Medical Area.\nAs of 2011, the station has a single three-car-long passenger platform on the southerly (inbound) track, which is shared by both inbound and outbound trains. Because of the short platform, passengers exiting trains at Yawkey must be in the front three cars of the train on outbound trains, or the rearmost three cars on inbound trains.\nYawkey was opened on April 29, 1988, and initially was only used for special service to Fenway Park to and from Boston Red Sox games.
