It is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.\nMinnesota State Highways 4, 23, and 55 are three of the main arterial routes in the city.\nPaynesville is located along the North Fork of the Crow River and Lake Koronis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4\u00a0km), all of it land.\nThe site of Paynesville was put first officially on the map in 1857 with the founding of a Post Office, postmastered by Edwin E. Payne, who served only for a few months. 30 years later, as the Soo Line Railroad arrived in the area, a second Post Office was founded right near the tracks, and a second separate village developed her, called New Paynesville.
