Prior to 1996, Chadds Ford Township was known as Birmingham Township, Delaware County, and the name was changed to allow the township to correspond to both its census-designated place and to reflect its role in the Battle of Brandywine.\nChadds Ford was home to N.C. Wyeth, his son Andrew Wyeth, and grandson Jamie Wyeth. Brandywine Battlefield is located in the township, along with the Brandywine River Museum, which houses much of the Wyeth collection.\nAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 8.8\u00a0square miles (22.7\u00a0km\u00b2), of which, 8.7\u00a0square miles (22.5\u00a0km\u00b2) of it is land and 0.1\u00a0square miles (0.2\u00a0km\u00b2) of it (0.80%) is water.\nAs of the 2000 census, 3,170 people, 1,314 households, and 910 families resided in the township.
